How to get your Google review link and make a QR code

A direct review link takes your customer straight to the review box, with no searching. It is the single most useful thing to have ready, and it takes a few minutes to set up.

Sign in to the Google account that manages your business profile, then search for your business name on Google. In the panel that appears you should see a button to ask for reviews or share a review link. Copy the link it gives you. Google changes its menus from time to time, so if the button has moved, search for 'ask for reviews' inside your Business Profile.

The link will usually be a short address that starts with https://g.page/r/ or a longer Google address ending in your business's place ID. Either works.

Test it

Open the link on your own phone, signed out or from a different account. You should land on a page asking you to rate and review your business. If it takes you to a search page instead, copy the link again.

Make a QR code

Free QR code makers will turn your link into an image. Download it at a high resolution, print it and test it with a phone before you commit to printing hundreds. Add a short line next to it such as 'Scan to leave us a review'.

Printing a QR code properly

  • Print it at least about 2 cm square, and bigger if people will scan it from a distance
  • Use dark code on a light background with plenty of white space around it
  • Do not stretch, crop or add a logo over the middle
  • Test the printed version with two different phones before you print a batch
  • Put a short line next to it: Scan to leave us a review

Where to put it

PlaceWhy it works
Business cardsCustomers keep them, and you can hand one over as you finish
Invoices and quotesIt is in front of them when they are thinking about the job
Van sign or stickerA scan from the pavement or a neighbour's phone
A leaflet left after the jobA reminder that is not a message
Email signatureEvery email carries a gentle prompt

If something does not work

  • The link opens a search page instead of the review box: copy the link again from your Google Business Profile
  • The link opens the wrong business: you may have more than one listing, so check which one is yours
  • The QR code will not scan: check size and contrast, and that you have not distorted it
  • Customers say they cannot post: they need to be signed in to a Google account to leave a review
  • You are not sure the link is right: open it on a friend's phone and look for the review box
  • In a text or email sent after each job
  • On your invoices and quotes
  • On the back of business cards
  • On a sticker inside the van or on a leaflet you leave with the customer
  • In the footer of your emails

Keep it honest

The same rules apply however the link reaches the customer: ask everyone, do not offer rewards, and do not write reviews for people. A review link is just a convenience for honest feedback.

Common questions

Is a QR code free to make?

Yes. Many free tools generate them. Avoid ones that ask you to pay to keep the code working, and keep a copy of the link.

Do customers need a Google account?

Yes, they have to be signed in to Google to leave a review.

Can I make a QR code for my WhatsApp too?

Yes, using your wa.me link. See our guide to adding a WhatsApp button.

Does the QR code expire?

A code that points straight to your link does not expire, but codes made through some paid services can stop working if you stop paying, so check before you print.
