Your domain, step by step
Your domain is your web address, such as yourbusiness.co.uk. You buy it yourself, so it is always yours. We connect it to your site.
- Choose a nameA .co.uk is the best fit for most UK trades. Keep it short and close to your business name. If it is taken, add your town or trade, for example davesplumbingleeds.co.uk. Avoid hyphens and numbers. A .uk or .com is fine too.
- Buy it from a reputable registrarRegister it in your own name with your business details, and turn on auto-renew. Cheap first-year prices often renew higher, so check the renewal price before you buy. Keep your login safe: it is the key to your domain.
- Create a free Cloudflare accountWe guide you step by step. You add your domain there, and Cloudflare gives you two "nameserver" addresses. You change them at your registrar. It takes about ten minutes, and can take up to a day or two to start working.
- We connect itYou add us to your Cloudflare account as a member, and we upload your site and link the domain. The account and the domain both stay yours, and you can remove us at any time.
- Tell us about email firstIf you already use email on that domain (you@yourbusiness.co.uk), tell us before you change the nameservers (step 3) so we copy the email settings across. Otherwise your email could stop working.
Good to know
- Already own a domain? Use it. The steps are the same.
- Already have a website on it? Tell us first. Changing nameservers can switch the old site off.
- Until your domain is connected, your preview and site work at a temporary address. Preview links are temporary, and are deleted if you decide not to go ahead.
- Email mailboxes on your domain are not included. Your registrar, Google or Microsoft sell them, and we can point you the right way.
- Hosting is on Cloudflare's free plan. If Cloudflare ever changes its free plan, we will tell you and help you move or choose a plan, which you would pay Cloudflare directly.
- If you ever want to leave: remove us from your Cloudflare account, or change the nameservers back at your registrar, and ask us for a copy of your site files.
